With our innovative concept for South Lelystad we aim to achieve an architectural and urban planning that meets current demands with regard to space, comfort and identity, and plan to realise this by designing a CO_2 -neutral concept with better integrated environmental and living qualities. This urban concept is based on the typical natural and landscape qualities of the Hollandse Hout (a 900-hectare wooded area) and the neighbouring wetlands. The result is a typical vegetated wetland landscape with water, pastures and forest. The housing programme blends into this landscape. The energy concept is based on a combination of minimising the energy demand, maximising the passive solar energy contribution to household heating, using solar collectors as primary heat source and a combination of photovoltaic (PV) panels and wind turbines to generate sufficient amounts of electricity per year. Large roofs support PV modules and thermal solar collectors. Vertical-axle wind turbines are located on top of the buildings. From experience with other CO_2-neutral projects, we have found that a combination of direct thermal solar heat and solar heat storage using a heat pump with soil storage gives better results than just a heat pump with a soil accumulator or an open groundwater source. The primary energy use and CO_2 balance is zero, which is calculated using the EN823 spreadsheet. Electricity is generated using 50% PV and 50% wind.
