The thermal performance of a green roof on the Roddy/Bale garage/dance studio in Seattle, Washington (designed by Miller Hull Partnership in 2005) was examined in the spring of 2006. The roof covers approximately 102 m~2 [1100 ft~2] of conditioned (dance studio) space and unconditioned (garage) space. A small office, with a conventional roof, overlooks the green roof, which is planted with various sedum species and mosses. The building is a compelling architectural example of a roofing approach that can help reduce urban heat island effects by providing cooler surfaces and increasing evapotranspiration (the recycling and release of water from plants to the surrounding air). The roof also mitigates rainwater release from the roof surface.rnAn initial study of the roof's performance was conducted in late spring 2006 as part of a case study class at the University of Oregon. A follow-up study began in the summer of 2006 in an effort to more accurately determine the seasonal thermal behavior and amount of moisture held by the green roof. Findings from the initial study revealed that the green roof mediated temperatures better than the adjacent conventional roof (which provided a convenient performance benchmark). A thermal lag was observed under the green roof, with heat transfer patterns shifted in time relative to the conventional roof.
