In a naturally-ventilated building, the pattern of incoming airflow through operable windows not only impacts the physical performance of the building, but it also influences the interior environmental condition. Data on how building occupants control incoming airflow through operable windows are not fully understood and more research is needed. The objective of this study is to describe the manual control pattern of operable windows and to determine whether variation in physical environmental conditions influences the operation of windows. A field survey of window operation in a naturally-ventilated office building in Berkeley, California was carried out. Results are presented in terms of change in window status (open and closed) and percentage of windows open versus external air temperature and wind speed. Further research is required before occupants' control pattern of operable window in naturally-ventilated buildings can be developed.
