This paper is to observe structural performance of the stone masonry pagoda focusing mainly onrnload path and structural stability issues. One-to-eight scale model for whole structure was prepared to investigaternthe bearing stress distribution in the bottom layer as the structure is stacked by story by story. The sequentialrnchange of bearing stress distribution allows us to estimate the degree of load distribution between interiorrnfilling stones and perimeter masonry stones. Also, one-quarter scale models of several substructures were preparedrnfor the simulation of possible failure mechanisms. In parallel with the experimental tests the numericalrnsimulation was performed to set-up test plan and to compare the test results. It is expected that the results ofrnthis study can provide reliable guidelines for reconstruction of the pagoda which was planned to be completedrnin about 2012.
