Expanding logistics service demands facility enhancement of port and harbor systems in SouthKorea. A number of new ports under construction have adopted the berthing facility with gravity caissonswhich requires sufficient of bearing capacity of soft ground. The homogenization methods were investigated toproperly evaluate the effective values of stiffness moduli and Poisson’s ratios of the soft clay layer improvedby sand compaction piles. The finite element method was used to compare the effective values of the homogenizedsoil to the soil in original configuration. The stiffness moduli generally increase as the replacement ratioincreases whereas the Poisson’s ratios decrease. The length of the periodic cell is not influential in the stiffnessmoduli and Poisson’s ratios. Computed value of the vertical shear stiffness decreases as the length of the periodiccell increases indicating the importance of choosing the homogenized value of the shear stiffness modulusin the vertical plane.
