Piles subjected to large lateral loading, such as those supporting retaining walls and bridgeabutments require detailed design and analysis to ensure that the piles are adequately reinforced and that thelateral deflection is within acceptable limits. Various design methods are available. However different methodsoften give different results; and the structural design will potentially be either too conservative or inadequate.This paper will back-analyze the data of several lateral load tests on piles of different size installed invarious geological conditions. The conclusion would serve as a guide in the selection of analytical methods inthe design of laterally loaded piles.
