Large scale laboratory model tests (diameter of 0.45 m and height of 0.9 m) were conducted toinvestigate the consolidation behavior of soil-cement column improved soft clayey model grounds. The influenceof area improvement ratio (α), depth improvement ratio (β), magnitude of applied loading and types ofsoil were investigated by comparing the amount of consolidation settlement and the rate of consolidation. Twotypes of soil were used, namely reconstituted Ariake clay and Ariake clay and sand mixture. Test results showthat the settlement deceases with the increase of α? and β . The rate of consolidation of with the column case ismuch faster than that of without the column case. Using the existing method for calculating the settlementtimecurve, the method yields a good prediction comparing with the measured data.
