In an effort to improve equipment reliability and reduce maintenance costs, a municipal wastewater treatment plant installed a real-time vibration monitoring system that augments conventional vibration analysis techniques with advanced algorithms developed for military and aerospace applications. This paper describes the informal verification and validation process that gave maintainers confidence in the system and the ensuing maintenance paradigm shift from preventive and reactive maintenance to condition-based maintenance. Specific examples of incipient bearing fault detection and an associated cost benefit analysis are presented.
