The conclusions of this study are: 1) Under non-abrasive conditions, the wear performance of polyethylene is dominated by the properties of polyethylene, applied load and sliding distance. For materials with similar chemistries and surface finish, increasing the surface hardness of the femoral head beyond that of CoCrMo does not necessarily reduce wear 2) Under abrasive conditions, increased wear results most likely from the action of the abrasives on polyethylene. In this study, the contributions of femoral head scratches to the overall wear rate were not statistically significant.
