The simple adhesion gradient system used for this study demon-strates that cell motion can be directed by fixed gradients of ligand covalently attached to a substrate in addition to the well charac-terized effects of soluble gradients. We believe that this will be a critical tool for solving a variety of problems involving cell motion and tissue integration in the broad field of tissue engineering.
