This study has shown the main wear regime for a series of retrieved LCS MB TKR inserts was delamination. a mechanism indicatative of oxidation. FTIR analysis confirmed insert oxidation. The in vitro study showed no significant difference between GP and γ-Air insert rates of wear. The main difference, however, was the way in which 66% of the γ-Air inserts failed. Bearings of this type are currently applied in UKRs using stabilised, oxidation resistant, UHMWPE. This study indicates the UKR design was not prevalent to fatigue failure, and oxidation degradation was necessary for fatigue failure to occur.
