The continued need to extend belt system capacities to meet growing production requirements has resulted in longer, higher horsepower, more complex conveyor systems. Operators commonly utilize multiple drive locations to provide acceptable tensions for conveyors with high power requirements. This creates the need for precise load sharing among drives to minimize system tensions and tension fluctuations. This chapter explores the use of mechanical transmissions with integral hydroviscous couplings to provide the control needed for these complex conveyor systems. It also discusses recent advances in the manufacturing and control technology for these drive systems and how these technologies result in more cost effective solutions.
