Abstract: Active constrained layer damping has been shown to bean effective way of controlling structural vibration.The success of the technique depends significantly onthe strain imparted to the constraining layer by anactuator made of a smart material - typically apiezoelectric ceramic. The possibility of usingmagnetostrictive smart patches as actuators is exploredin this regard. Comparisons of performance are madebetween commonly used piezoelectric ceramic andproposed magnetostrictive actuators on the basis ofmaximum power consumption. It is shown thatmagnetostrictives offer benefits particularly in thelower frequencies. !9
