While ultrasonic meters have been used for many years in liquid measurement, they are relatively new to the natural gas industry. Since multipath meters are more complex and offer greater accuracy than single path meters, they are more expensive. The decision to use a single-path versus a multipath meter depends upon value perceived by the customer. Residential ultrasonic meters are being used in large numbers in the UK at the present time. Due to their electronic nature, residential ultrasonic meters can be readily adapted to include value-added features that are costly to add to diaphragm meters. Ultrasonic meters are electronic devices and are very reliable; however, one must make sure that the meter is operating properly. In order to verify that the meter is operating properly, all meters should be flow calibrated. The worldwide natural gas industry appears to be embracing ultrasonic technology rapidly due to the benefits ultrasonic meters offer.
