At a large industrial site in central Poland, a multiphase vacuum extraction system (MPVE) has been installed for the removal of a large floating layer of aromatic solvents originating from past spills. The removal of the free phase light nonaqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) is probably the first in situ remediation in Poland. Prior to the design and installation of the MPVE system, pilot tests were carried out to determine the most suitable technique for the removal of the free product. The recovery techniques compared were: passive skimming, soil vapor extraction, and MPVE. The results of the tests were used for the design of the full-scale system. The removal system has been in operation since April 2000 and works effectively. In the first 8 months, about 41 m~3 of pure product has been removed.
