DEMONSTRATION OF THE BIOREMEDY PROCESS FOR MTBE REMEDIATION AT RETAIL GASOLINE STATIONS

MTBE remediation at retail gasoline stations has been demonstrated using an enhanced bioremediation system (BioRemedy). A specialized MTBE-degrading mixed culture was added to aquifer material in combination with oxygen creating bio-barriers to limit migration of MTBE plumes. MTBE is transformed to CO_2 as groundwater moves through the biobarrier. Results from these sites indicated up to four orders of magnitude reduction of MTBE concentrations within the biobarrier in a few months of operation. Biobarriers provide an effective means for controlling MTBE plume migration.
