A slurry coating of luminescent powders (phosphors) from a photoresist suspension is typically used to coat tri-color (red, green, blue) patterns for CRTs. The long-range challenge for flat panel display technology is to develop higher resolution information displays, which will require significantly improved phosphor screening methods. The overall goal of this project is to improve the manufacturing and performance of flat high definition display screens by development of an improved phosphor deposition system. A new photoresist system, consisting of PVP (polyvinylpyrrolidone) and DAS (di-azido-stilbene disulfonic acid sodium salt), is believed to be better for high-resolution displays. The PVP/DAS system has the added benefit of being more environmentally acceptable over the currently used PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) / ADC (ammonium dichromate) system, since it is free of chromium or other toxic metals.
