EVALUATION OF PRESSURE VESSELS IN HYDROGEN SERVICE

Some pressure vessels in hydrogen service at a process plant were subject to routine ultrasonic inspections during operation and were found to contain widespread reflectors in welds and parent material. These indications were found to be poorly reproducible, through repeat inspections and, due to the type of service environment, the operator expressed concerns over the possibility of hydrogen induced cracking (HIC). A programme of automated ultrasonic inspection was instigated to provide further information on characteristics of the indications and to improve the reproducibility of measurement.
