An experimental programme aimed at establishing characteristics to be accomplished by coating mortars for protection of reinforcement in concrete has been carried out. Four different commercial mortars and three reference concretes were evaluated for durability. The results show that none of the commercial mortars contribute in all aspects to the durability of reinforced concrete: some are not effective even in moderate aggressive environment, however there can be mortars that contribute in an important way to prevent reinforcement corrosion in high aggressive environment. From the characteristics of the mortar, an "effective cover" has been calculated, that represents the real value of 10 mm of mortar considered as concrete cover in a specific environment.
