This paper describes the analysis and results of a nonlinear dynamic simulation of a large rock impacting a metallic multi-barrier waste package (WP) as it enters the underground tunnel during e mplacement. The evaluation of the elastic-plastic beavhir of the proposed WP concept was performed using the ANSYS 5.0A finite element analysis code. The evaluation yields the critical rock mass and size that can strike the metallic multi-barrier waste package without breaching the containment barriers.
