COnsideration of Yucca Mountain as a site for storing high level nuclear waste has led to an intense debate regarding the economic, sockial, and political impacts of managing nuclear waste. The debate hasconcerned Yucca Mountain and-more generally-the appropriateness of geologic disposal and w hether it is necessary to act now rather than delay dealing with the waste issue. Activities of the DOE have been challenged by the state of nevada and others who are opposed to a repository, and by electric utilities who favor removal of waste from near power plants.
