Classical scheduling theory has been far from successful innsolving practical needs of the factory management. Management objectivesnare often many, ill-defined and changing. In general, the management isninterested in a decision-support tool, facilitating specification ofntheir objectives as they change, so that it can react to a constantlynchanging shop floor, making short-term and long-term planning decisions.nThe authors describe ReDS, which is a dynamic, intelligent and real-timenfactory scheduling environment. ReDS combines both artificialnintelligence and operations research techniques, finding solutions whichnare not always optimal but acceptable to the changing needs ofnmanagement
