GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING PRACTICES IN BEIJING AREA

Expanded rapidly in recent years from its ancient city proper to an area covers more than 1,500km~2, Beijing has been undergoing an enormous changing and erected within and around it Many high-rises, crossroads and municipality works have been erected within and around the city. Imaginably, many new geotechnical engineering problems are in turn raised in front of the engineers badly needed to be solved, amongst witch those related to high-rise and underground structures have been proved to be critical ones. Four main aspects of the problems encountered will be discussed in this paper. They are: 1 uneven settlement analysis and controlling; 2 the regulations of groundwater distribution and its impact on foundation engineering; 3 the assessment of seismic safety for engineering sets; 4 the need of establishing GIS and putting it into practice.
