When dredged clay slurry with high water content is discharged into a pond, suspended soil particles settle loosely. The dredged clay layer thus created is in the consolidation condition and subsequently settles largely due to its own weight in the long term. To create a reliable foundation ground for a variety of infrastructures, the placement of good quality fill material over the dredged clay layer and the ground improvement to accelerate the consolidation are necessary. For the design of vertical drains in such a soft reclaimed clay ground, the accurate evaluation of the initial profile of reclaimed clay layer and consolidation parameters is necessary. Based on the authors' experience on rapid construction of sea reclamation projects, the key issues for predicting the settlement of reclaimed land are pointed out along with the flow of construction. Then, the special emphasis is placed on the prediction method of ground model and the determination of consolidation parameters for vertical drain.
