Himalayan rivers are the main source of hydro-power potential and the estimated potential is about 325000 MW. Out of it, only 2 percent has been tapped till now. The Himalayan rivers carry large quantity of sediment during monsoon. The enormous hydro-power potential of the rivers is mostly utilised by constructing run-of-river schemes, where it is imperative to provide desilting arrangement to limit the maximum size of sediment entering the turbines. The paper outlines the salient features of desilting arrangements constructed/planned at some of the important hydroelectric projects on river Ganga and Yamuna in Uttar Pradesh.
