In fiber amplifiers, erbium ion has been the most extensively studied among rare earths due to its long lifetime, broad stark splitting in glass hosts as we II as the spectral location of gain bands near the optic al window in silica fibers. In this paper, new aspects o f erbium doped silica fiber amplifier design in materi al engineering will be discussed; the evanescent wave filtering based on Er-Sm system for inherently flatten ed C band, the co-operative energy transfer among E r-Tm system for potential S band applications. The ef fects of doping profile control that includes both core and cladding along with an optimized selection of rar e earth will be introduced for further development of noble fiber amplifiers.
