For the first time in Eurocode 9: Aluminium, fracture mechanics will be introduced as an alternative method for the assessment of structures. The basis for such assessments is the knowledge of the stress intensity K and the form of the stress field in the vicinity of the crack tip and as well as the material resistance of the structure to be assessed. In contrary to static fracture mechanics, the dynamic fracture resistance is formulated as a function of the crack propagation rate da/dN versus the amplitude of the stress-intensity triangle openK. To bring these assessments closer to the engineer in practice, such crack propagation rates for welded aluminium alloys are given as mean values and as upper limit curves on the basis of statistical analysis.
