Characterization of biogenic amorphous silica deposits in Greece and their industrial potential

Several types of biogenic amorphous silica-rich sediments occur in Tertiary basins of Greece. Most of the deposits are characterized as calcareous or clayey diatomite (moler), whereas in some of the deposits volcanic glass is a significant component. Based on the estimated reserves, the most important deposits of calcareous type are those of Samos, Aitania Crete and Zakynthos, and those of Elassona (Thessaly), and Vegora, Komnina and Klidi, W. Macedonia for the moler type. All major deposits have been tested successfully as cement additives. The Zakynthos rock may find applications for the production of synthetic CaSiO_3. The moler diatomite type may find applications in the production of lightweight aggregates (LWA) used in gardening, agriculture, civil engineering, lightweight concrete and insulation.
