An easier route to Expert systems in manufacturing

An Expert system is a computer program which represents and reasons with knowledge of some specialist subject with a view to solving problems or giving advice. With clear relevance to manufacturing, their application has been limited by the substantial effort required to create the rule sets required by the traditional route. This paper describes PERITUS software which dispenses with rule sets, and uses instead, the flowcharts which are an essential part of system documentation. A comparison is made between the rule set and the flowchart routes, using an example. Details of an actual manufacturing application are also included.
