ANALYSIS OF OPERATION OF THE FORTHCOMING MEDITERRANEAN RING

In the near future, the electricity network around thernMediterranean basin will form a closed ring. The aimrnof the MEDRING project is to analyze in detail thernbehaviour of this ring in 2005 and 2010 and to proposernsolutions to improve its reliability. The project consistsrnof an economic analysis, a static and dynamic analysisrnof the system's security, research into solutions to thernconstraints encountered and proposals for coordinationrnrules to ensure secure operation of the system as arnwhole. This report presents the main results obtained inrnthe first phase of the project, the economic analysis.rnThis analysis enabled the optimal levels for energyrnexchanges between the various countries in the ring tornbe determined, as well as allowing the financial gainsrnwhich such levels would provide to be estimated. Thernanalysis is based on the most probable hypothesesrnconcerning the evolution of the Mediterranean networkrnbetween now and 2010, but also takes into accountrnalternative hypotheses such as the implementation ofrnundersea cables between the North and South of thernring.
