AIDS vaccine development

摘要

Development of an AIDS vaccine is critical to containing the HIV epidemic.Worldwide,the number of people infected with HIV continues to increase,adn it is estimated that 30 to 40 million people will have been infected with HIV by the year 2000.Although potent antiviral drugs have been effective in a small number of countries in terms of reducing mortality from HIV,they do not eradicate the virus which may resume replication whenever therapy is stopped.In addition,potent antiviral drugs are not available throughout most of the world and will have little effect on slowing the epidemic.
