The Maintenance of Exterior Wood Joinery: Results from a Collaborative Project to Develop Best Practise Guidelines

This paper presents results from a project that sought to investigate specific areas of difficulty encountered in maintenance redecoration of wooden joinery, and to identify solutions that would ensure consistent delivery of high quality results. An initial scoping exercise identified the need for guidance on methods to prevent failures over knots, the use of wood fillers, and methods for reinstating weather-degraded wood surfaces. However, the results from an extensive series of experimental trials to study the performance of state-of-the-art repair and coating materials used in maintenance, were found to be extremely disappointing and clearly indicated a need for considerable product improvement. These results will be used in a broader context to illustrate innovation needs in repair materials, including enhanced tolerance to imperfect surfaces and other adverse conditions experienced during application.
