Treatment of Wood and Wood Products with Siloxanes

Wood and wood products are highly aesthetic materials with a lots of advantages but also some disadvantages. Especially the water absorption and dimensional instability gives a lot of headache for many end users and limits the successful use of wood and wood products for several applications. Silicones can help to make wood and wood products hydrophobic, better water resistant and less inflammable. This paper examines effects of siloxane treatment on wood and wood products. Specificly, it covers water absorption and desorption characteristics, dimensional stability items and flame retardance. Besides the presentation of mainly theoretical investigations, also practical consequences and examples for practical use will be discussed. Additionally, different application techniques have been investigated and compared.
