The objective of this study was to identify priority "emerging" environmental issues that might appear on radar screens in the 21~st century. The first step in the assessment was to prepare a questionnaire, which was distributed world-wide to environmental scientists, managers and policy makers, to a few members of the business community and to a global network of United Nations Environment Programme Collaborating Centres. the response rate was surprisingly high, and many of the comments received were quite detailed.
