Site assessment is a step by step process of discovery and should be undertaken for every site. Without a properly procured, supervised and interpreted site investigation hazards which lie in the ground cannot be identified. It is vital that financial decision makers appreciate that "you pay for a site investigation whether you have one or not". The aim of a site assessment is to prepare a comprehensive collection of information and to interpret and report on this information. The paper reviews the characteristics of steelworks and colliery sites, the aims and components of a site assessment and discusses the advantages of commencing the work before the steelworks or mine is closed, and certainly before the works are demolished. The importance of archival research and desk studies is emphasised since these elements of the overall programme are low cost. A great deal of importance is attached to the walk-over survey and especially the point that the whole team should visit the site together.
