Extent of land degradation is increasing steadily as revealed by national statistics. Therndegradation has variable impact on reduction in productivity. Among various degradations highestrnfraction is occupied by erosion. With the time population has increased at the malthus rate. Thernpopulation explosion occurred in the last three decades i.e. 1971 onward. Maximum landrndegradation occurred during 1975-80 followed 1985-95 and this corresponded with the increase inrnpopulation growth. The intermittent reduction in land degradation is corroborated to conservationrnmeasures. The increasing population demanded constant increase in the national productivity tornfulfil sufficiency in food, fibre, fuel and fodder etc. Various feasible means of restoring productivityrnthrough alternate cropping, diversified agriculture and people’s concerted efforts are presented tornincrease global productivity. It is hoped that these strategic measure would result in required foodrnsecurity for the country in posterity.
