After improving the sample preparation phase, notably for the sampled core homogenisation, on site and laboratory methods have shown similar performances on PAHs determination. The HS-UV-spectrophotometry, on site method, allows the 16 US EPA PAHs quantification in 30 minutes, including 5 minutes of drying, 10 minutes of crushing and sieving, 10 minutes of extraction and 5 minutes of analysis. Therefore, the PAHs concentration of 20 samples can be determinate per day. Moreover, the sample cost is 20$ (staff, chemical products and material amortization all included). This on field method avoids the time delays and risk encountered with samples shipping to laboratories. The research is now focused on a field ultrasonic probe utilization that will allow the reduction of the sample preparation time (10 minutes instead of 25 minutes) and the improvement of the trueness and the reliability of the extraction phase. Moreover, the use of artificial intelligence could improve the mathematical resolution of spectra. Finally, it will be indispensable to validate this on site rapid test on other former coke sites.
