Investigating the Causes of Electric Accidents in Greece: the Case of the Electric Power Industry

This paper investigates the causes of electric accidents and brings forward evidence from Greek electric power industry. It is part of an analysis of occupational electric accidents occurred in this sector between 1992 and 1996. Here, we present electric accidents' causation, as it is documented by the supervisors and the safety officers, who investigate them. This was achieved through the analysis of their opinions about accidents' causation, as they are written in the accident notification forms, after their coding and analyzing by the researchers. Each one of the above groups faces the issue in a different way. The present model of analyzing the accidents' causes does not help in identifying the major causes and does not lead to the prevention of the accidents and the avoidance of their reoccurrence. A model offering these possibilities is proposed.
