In the recent years, strengthening and repairing of existing concrete structures have become an important issue. Two possible methods of strengthening such members are a) the use of external tendons, where the strength is enhanced by prestressing and b) the use of steel or FRP plates bonded to the surface, thus improving the strength of the member. However, the behavior of such beams is yet to be clearly understood. This paper describes the experimental investigation conducted to study the behavior of strengthening methodology of existing structures by external tendons and plates bonding. The experimental results show that the strength of existing structures could be enhanced satisfactorily by the above two methods.
