In this paper, effect of axial dispersion on the yield of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) in an industrial catalytic distillation column was investigated using axial dispersion model. It was found that, for a given average residence time, the yield of MTBE can reach a maximum while axial Peclet number (Pe_a) is increasing, and that, when Pe_a is low, axial dispersion must be taken into account in order to succeed in design or scale-up.
