Ship detection is a crucial application for globalrnmonitoring for environment and security. In order torndesign new operational services, an estimation of shiprndetection performances is highly desirable. This paperrnaddresses some results of performances assessmentrnusing ENVISAT/ASAR data.rnAn overview of common ship detection strategy using arnCFAR approach is presented in order to highlight anrnimproved characterization of false alarms. Arnmethodology of characterisation of ship detectionrnperformance is presented including the use of collocatedrnmeteo-oceanic information. Some preliminary results ofrnAIS collocation are illustrated.rnThe main result of this paper is the impact of SARrninstrument artefacts on ship detection reports. Morernspecifically, the noise figure of the sensor with respectrnto the incidence angle has a direct impact on shiprndetection sensitivity and the number of false alarms. Inrnorder to take this situation into account for operationalrnsystems, a background activity of calibration/validationrnof ship detection processing chains is necessary.
