A fractional factorial design was used in a batch experiment to investigate the pH, calcium, sulfurand nitrogen compound effects on hydrogen production using sewage sludge microflora acclimatedwith a sucrose (20g COD/L) substrate. The experimental results indicate that all two-factorinteractions were statistically significant. Fifty percent of the three-factor interactions weresignificant, implying that 50% of the two-factor interaction patterns depended on the third factorlevels. According to the results, pH 6.7 favors hydrogen production but calcium did not. Theconcentration orders for the sulfur and nitrogen compounds in reducing hydrogen production wereSO4 -2
