The results of the initial measurements in the South End neighborhood along the MBTA Silver LineBRT route in Boston, MA indicated that idling Neoplan buses were generating low-frequency noise withlevels high enough to cause vibration and rattling inside nearby residences. When idling at 700 rpm, thebus engine was found to generate a tone at 35 Hz that emanated from the exhaust, causing audible lowfrequencynoise inside the homes and exciting vibration of the building walls and attached objects. Inaddition, a comparison of the results in Boston with the stationary field test data suggests that there aresignificant sound reflections at the Boston site that may be exacerbating the problem there.
