LONGWALL MINE NOISE AND RECOMMENDATIONS TO REDUCE WORKER NOISE EXPOSURE

Longwall face workers noise exposures can be reduced through engineering noise controls andin the case of the headgate operator, with administrative and/or engineering controls. Most ofthe engineering controls are not “quick fixes” and would require the cooperation of equipmentsuppliers/manufacturers. On the other hand, as noted above, the ready availability of acomfortable, quiet place could easily solve the noise exposure problems associated with theheadgate operator. But, the authors consider this will not happen unless there is a comfortable“quiet” place for the headgate operator to retreat to that would be close to or especially designedand located on the equipment.
