This data from this measurement program demonstrated that topography had a significanteffect on the propagating acoustic signal. This could make significant differences in theprediction of total noise exposure that is routinely done around all major airports andairbases. Each of the four participating countries have used this data base to modify theirnoise models. A second finding of the test was that the directivity of the aircraft also had asignificant impact on the measured noise levels. This was especially evident in themeasurements at sites 5 and 6 where the aircraft is turning as it goes past the site. Althoughthe original test was not conceived to test dire&&y patterns, the high quality of the datacollection made this analysis possible.The test at Narvik is a great example of the cooperative effort that resulted frommutual concern about noise problems in the participating countries. This high quality datasetis now available for anyone to check various noise propagation models against measuredaircraft flight sound levels.
