Research.has been carried out into the effect of different blade profiles on the radiated noise of an experimental highspeedsheet metal shear. The specimens being cut were roll formed sheet steel products of an approximatelysinusoidal profile produced by BHP Building Products, Australia. For this product, five different shear blade profilesof vzxying blade angles were. designed and produced. In the tests, three parameters, blade profile angle, speed ofcutting and blades alignment, could be varied independently. A pressure transducer was used as a meawe of cuttingforce, allowing an investigation of the relationship between radiated noise and the time history of the cutting force.Results show that the blade angle in shear cutting is of great significance for the reduction of the radiated noise.Speed of cutting was found to have a significant but lesser effect. Blade misalignment gave some advantage when theblade angle was less than 0.5 degrees.
