PREDICTING ROADSIDE NOISE LEVELS FROM NEAR FIELD TRAILER MEASUREMENTS

The results of this study show that a new surface (one that is smooth) produces lower roadside tire noise. The roadsurfaces that produced the loudest roadside tire noise had large exposed aggregate. The difference between theloudest (old Class D asphalt) and quietest (new PCCP) roadside noise levels was 7 dBA. This corresponds to anSO-percent reduction in acoustic energy. Future work in this area might investigate the correlation between thesurface smoothness and roadside tire noise and the feasibility of producing smooth surfaces that wear in anacceptable manner.
