Sound intensity is a powerful tool used in determining sound power of any machinery. Itcan be effectively used to identify, quantify and rank different sound sources in amachine. This paper presents a case study of sound intensity measurements on acommercial excavator cab for estimating sound power contribution from different panelsof the cab. The testing was performed in a hemi – anechoic chamber so as to simulate thefree field effects. The data obtained were used to rank panels as per their sound powercontribution and thus identify major contributors of noise. Sound intensity measurementswere also taken after adding acoustical treatments inside the cab and comparison wasdone for panel contribution with and without acoustical treatments. The comparative datawere used to evaluate the effect of the treatments used and suggest new noise controltreatments. The paper also proposes a method of measuring panel power contribution inlaboratory in the absence of field operating conditions.
