Acoustic measurement standards like ECMA-74, ISO-7779, etc. specify a procedure formeasuring the sound generated by desktop printers. The procedure for measuring printer noiseemissions was originally developed to cover laser, inkjet, and impact printers when the largemajority of printers did not have color capability. Since that time desktop devices with graphicmonochrome and color capability have been developed, and consumer demand for color printinghas grown. The continuing and growing interest in color raises the question of how to includecolor printing into acoustic measurement standards. To help answer this question, this paperpresents sound power data generated by several inkjet and laser desktop devices in monochromeand color modes. For color printing, sound power levels were measured using the JBMSdocument test document, also used by the German Blue Angel ecological criterion, in place ofthe monochrome test document specified by ECMA-74 and ISO-7779.
