The Federal Aviation Administration’s Aviation Environmental Design Tool integrates noise andair quality modeling for aircraft environmental analysis, and is planned to replace the IntegratedNoise Model and the Emissions and Dispersion Modeling System for airport environmentalstudies. Currently mandated aviation noise models assume a homogeneous atmosphere, butmodeling capabilities can be enhanced by including the effects of inhomogeneous atmospheres.Furthermore, acoustic propagation methods in development will be capable of including sitemeasuredatmospheric profiles. The Environmental Protection Agency’s AERMOD atmosphericdispersion model supports the import and quality control of measured meteorological data in astudy area. In keeping with the trend of integrated environmental modeling, such pre-processedmeasurements can be converted to profiles representing real inhomogeneous atmospheres in anacoustic propagation model. The applicability and feasibility of this measured-atmospheremethod will be discussed. In addition, the effects of measured vs. idealized atmospheres onacoustic propagation will be considered.
